Among the criminal celebrities of Prohibition-era Chicago, not even Al Capone was more notorious than two well-educated and highly intelligent Jewish boys from wealthy South Side families. In a meticulously planned murder scheme disguised as a kidnapping, Nathan Leopold and Richard Loeb chose fourteen-year-old Bobby Franks at random as their victim, abandoning his crumpled body in a culvert before his parents had a chance to respond to the ransom demand. Revealing secret testimony and raising questions that have gone unanswered for decades, Hal Higdon separates fact from myth as he unravels the crime, the investigation, and the trial, in which Leopold and Loeb were defended by the era's most famous attorney, Clarence Darrow. Higdon's razor sharp account of their chilling act, their celebrity, and their ultimate emergence as folk heroes resonates unnervingly in our own violent time. "The best book on this topic," says Pepperdine History and Law professor Edward J. Larson.

“Hal Higdon has done an outstanding job of putting the Leopold-Loeb case together and keeping the tension mounting. The case continues to mount in significance as the harbinger of the random murder syndrome of our century.”
--MEYER LEVIN, author of Compulsion

The Crime of the Century eBook Hal Higdon

Nathan Leopold, Jr. and Richard Loeb were brilliant young men from wealthy families, who, seeking to commit the perfect crime, kidnapped and murdered 14 year-old Bobby Franks. The senseless crime captured the imagination of 1924 Chicago, as well as the rest of the nation. The newspapers ran with the story, calling it "The Crime of the Century" and readers were fascinated from the time the crime was perpetrated until the time the murderers were sentenced. Leopold and Loeb were represented in court by the great and flamboyant defense attorney, Clarence Darrow whose aim was not to have them found innocent but rather, to avoid the death penalty. Other courtroom characters included Robert Crowe, an ambitious State's Attorney and Judge John Caverly, whose mission it was to decide whether the killers should hang. Author, Higdon researched the case well and put together an excellent history. I found the sections of the book that covered the killers' time in prison and beyond, to be the most interesting part of the book.

The Crime of the Century eBook Hal Higdon Reviews

Well crafted, true story of a murder that shocked America in 1924. Higdon has done a wonderful job of relating the story and providing all the facts without droning on and on. He also paints a vivid picture of life in Chicago during the Roaring 20s.
Fans of true crime and this era are in for a treat.
I've done a lot of research into the Leopold and Loeb case, and if you could only read one book on the subject, I'd recommend this one.
Over the last twenty or so years I have read a number of renditions about the Loeb Leopold murder of Bobby Frank's. True crime has always been a favorite reading genre and capital punishment a favorite academic study. When I saw this book available, I did not It expect any different information than what I had already read. The book is very well written a n d pulls you into the story as if it were fiction. Nicely done and an intriguing read.
Some interesting information in the beginning and ending parts but inbetween is about as boring as it gets. Mmm nnn
Got this book 43 years ago and have read it many times and now it is on my kindle! Very well written before during and after the murder. One of my favorite books.
Well researched book rendered and raped by horrific editing problems, weird breaks and numbers in various places possibly indicating footnotes. Detracts from authors efforts. Publisher might consider career change, into possibly fast food service.
Why the crime of the century, when there was only one victim, who was despatched swiftly with minimal pain?

Hal Higdon explains that the elements of the case the age of the victim; the way in which he was randomly selected and the respectable, affluent families of the killers went straight to the innermost fears of the newspaper-reading public. And it was the newspapers which fanned the flames of public interest.

No-one could understand the motivation for the crime.

There's no question that the case had fascinating aspects, including a second murder (this time of one of the perpetrators) and an impassioned plea for mercy by Clarence Darrow, who has been described as one of the greatest ever criminal law defenders.

A second reading of the book was equally gripping.

In the 1950s, Meyer Levin wrote a fictionalised account called "Compulsion", from which the film was made, featuring Orson Welles, Dean Stockwell and Bradford Dillman.

Both writers clearly had access to court, defence and prosecution records. Both books agree on many of the details.

Hal Higdon's book is highly recommended.
